The tone is set very early on with 77 Rusty Trombones, the song "If You Don't Blow Me By Now" is about exactly what the title says basically why aren't you blowing me. It is sung in the style of "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and is absolutely insane. Basically the only way to describe this is record is nuts. Funky beats under Blowfly's weird rapping slash spoken word slash singing which has been the typical for his entire career. Blowfly was the original dirty rapper long before Too Short and anyone else even thought of adding sex and shock to their rhymes. 77 Rusty Trombones will be his final album as Blowfly passed away last month from Liver cancer, but unlike Bowie this album is not a swan song or goodbye letter to fans, instead it is just more of him doing what he does. Maybe the one time Blowfly gets a little sentimental on this record is on "I Still Believe My Dick Can Fly" in which He gleefully believes he can still get it in with Michele Obama and Oprah. The entire record has more references to dicks and pussies that anything you have ever heard before, unless you have heard a Blowfly record before.

For almost 50 years Blowfly has done this kind of music which is not as witty as Weird Al, but just as funny and quite shocking. The songs are close to parodies using the same chords and music but with Blowfly saying the most insane things He possibly can over them. "Mountain Jew" is simply one of the most bonkers things you are ever going to let pass into your brain with it's country undertone but lyrics such as "bitches would have a smile on their mug/after deepthroating his plug" bring the "what the hell did he just say" vibe right back around. For someone that was suffering from cancer while recording this record there is zero loss in energy, his voice has aged of course but his primal screams and irreverence still hover around the 15 year old mark. There are a couple ways to look at 77 Rusty Trombones: 1. It is disgusting trash that really has no place in music or 2. This is pure silliness and fun and trying to dig deep into it is a pointless task. I tend to side on the later, so put the pretension away for a little while and just laugh at the pure absurdity of it all.
