VÉRITÉ has gone her own away for the two years that she has been releasing her music independently. The gamble has payed off with over 12 million plays on Spotify, and a fan base rabid for what the singer is going to do next. Her music is a haunting look at everyday life. What is really interesting though is how she doesn't fall into a standard pop music trap. VÉRITÉ is tailor made for pop super stardom. She has some indie cred, famous friends and a sound that could easily shift just a bit and be ready for mass consumption. However she doesn't do that, she is not going to restrain herself in that way. her music especially on this Living EP feels very free and expressive. These are raw emotions, like with much of her music and this is the only possible way of delivering these messages. This record opposed to her previous two is far less electro-pop and has a grander scale. Even on tracks like "Gesture" where the music is drilled down and small she is able to elevate it to another level and make something that could potentially sound dated feel completely new. The producers on the album have worked with the likes of Charlie XCX and BANKS which is just a perfect addition to VÉRITÉ's already solid skills.
One of the issues here however is that we are really getting more of the same. Each tracks really does have a very similar vibe and sound, which for only fives tracks can get a bit monotonous. There are certainly moments where songs get transcendent, but those moments seem to be very similar throughout the record. What may be happening is we are so spoiled with her silky smooth sound that at a point hearing this much of it at the same level gets a tad boring. You are torn because you know what you are listening to is really really special but you can't shake that feeling that at this point there needs to be a bit more of a push into something else. The first two tracks "Constant Crush" and "Underdressed" are by far the best songs on the album and have that really raw emotional state that she is masterful at, but the last three songs just sort of tow the line. It is probably time for VÉRITÉ to release a full record and move on from these songs which have been hanging around for awhile, but as it is we have to take what she will give us. For VÉRITÉ this is not her best EP, but for the rest of the world at large she is miles ahead.
