Noah Cyrus ingratiated herself in the mumble rap scene pretty early. Heaven forbid we go a few years without the dulcet tones of a Cyrus invading our ears She has released this her first EP Good Cry. Why do I mention mumble rap? Well Noah pretty famously had a public relationship with Rapper lil Xan that went awry almost as quickly as it came to fruition. The thing is in a recent interview Lil Xan revealed that the whole relationship was only cooked up by their shared record company. We know these kinds of relationships happen, but for someone to come out and flat out admit He only dated someone for publicity is fucking wild to me. It just goes to show you how companies try to force artists down our throats any way they can, regardless if it is their talent pulling them through. The first two tracks of this EP are nothing but frustrating. The first, some kind of mumble pop never gets chorus and features a few trap ad libs that sound fucking ridiculous from Cyrus. The second track "Mad at You" is this sweeping ballad with Cyrus singing her heart out, but the song literally never engages, has zero low end and sounds like someone who thinks they really know how to sing going on a bunch of vocal runs. Every bit of this record feels forced. She shoe horns in some country and honky tonk vibes on "Good Cry" but then also throws in some "yeah"'s and other ad libs that make you fucking cringe every time you hear them.
At least Miley felt like she was doing her own thing, trying something somewhat different with her music by Noah sounds like she is trying to touch every genre to make sure her streaming numbers are sky high. I don't even know what kind of delivery she is going for on "Punches" where she sounds like a combination of Lana Del Rey and Dolly Parton in the absolute worst possible way. "Sadness" constantly feels like she is going to drop into a EDM beat at any moment, it is almost like someone took a look at the top 6 songs in the country and decided to make a song based on those genres. There is zero soul throughout the entire record, just some hollow songs about nothing. The last track is called "Topanga (Voice Memo)" and is recorded and sung DIY, almost like it was done through an iphone. I hate to break it to you, but it wasn't and it's just another gimmick to try and make this album anything worth listening too. Too forced, too contrived and far too pandering Good Cry is an aboslute fucking mess. Avoid this thing like the plague.
