Rhode Island noise rock outfit Daughters have returned after an eight year hiatus. Their time apart may have softened their tumultuous personal lives but it has not softened the music one bit. You Won't Get What You Want is just as aggressive, just as angry and just as disillusioned with the world as ever. Melody becomes pointless here with big sounds being pushed at you with a fever pace. It almost feels like a dream, or more like a nightmare, where you can't quite get a hold of exactly what is going on, because so much is. Lyrics slip behind a mountain of sound that push this powerful sound straight down your throat. The first three songs are six, five and seven minutes long and all come with a major dose of power. The "noise" becomes so overpowering that it takes control of the entire album. "The Flammable Man", the album's shortest track at just over two minutes, descends into this swirl of almost Hardcore House, but with real instrumentation screaming at you. Noise Rock is often a very tough listen. You have to pick apart what the band is doing into little pieces to find something to latch onto because most of the time it's just overwhelming noise. "Less Sex" however is the most melodic of the bunch, it pairs almost bare vocals with this powerful chorus that bangs super hard. It gives you this slow burn that is missing on the rest of the record. This record feels far more focused than previous outings from Daughters, it's almost like they are actually growing up.
The lyrics are delivered as if from some kind of satanic pulpit, preaching the virtues of an absurdists mentality and decrying the ills of modern day life. Songs like "Ocean Song" become this massive wall of sound that presses ever forward as the lyrics slip further and further into the background. If you are looking for an album to put you on edge or make work pretty hellacious than this is the record for you. It is simply relentless in it's pursuit of powerful sound and for that it hits all the goalposts it sets for itself. By the end of the album you are ready to take a break, take a breath and let a calm wash over you. The last track slides into this almost orchestral end that makes the whole experience worth it. You can see why people like this kind of music because it leaves you with this euphoria after you get through it. It is a challenging record to say the least, but one that still has a bunch going for it. Listen if you dare, but be forewarned this is not for the faint of heart. It might be for the hard for hearing, but not the faint of heart. :)
