Mac Demarco - Another One

Another One
2015

There is an odd thing going on with Mac Demarco's newest release Another One. It is all at once completely laid back and frantic. The chill guitar is put through a techo filter that puts it somewhere on the verge of yacht rock but never quite reaching that sea sailing level. It is something almost impossible to explain because it really rests it's head almost no where. Is it Indie? Kind of. Could be Mainstream? Maybe. Who is this for? No clue. So then Another One comes down to one simple thing. How does it make you feel? And for most it will make them feel really good. It is a summer afternoon by the sea, but not a party more of sitting alone or with a couple people just experiencing the energy that the world is creating. If this seems an insanely poetic description it is because this albums begs for it. It is beyond normal explanation and thus the incredibly difficult time trying to wrap it up in a few paragraphs.

It comes down to the question of whether or not this album is good. It is. There is a certain situation where this is the perfect record, where this is exactly what you want and need to hear. The trouble is finding exactly when or where that place is. Each of the songs do follow a very similar pattern so you would assume there is some overlap or a repetitiveness however it is not the case. Instead the album flows together as one long piece rather than a bunch of parts. At only 8 tracks this makes Another One a perfect little put it on in the background and just kind of vibe out. At the end of the record Mac gives out his personal address in New York and asks the listener to come have a cup of coffee by the water if they are so inclined. It seems fitting that an album like this seeks to include the listener on that personal of a level, so perhaps you'll pack your bags, get that cup of coffee and ask Mac himself exactly what it all means.
