Nite-Funk is the often celebrated collaboration between producers Nite Jewel and Dam-Funk. The have prodcued a few songs here and there, and been in the same circles for years, but working totally as a duo is new territory for them. Well they absolutely kill it on their debut EP Nite-Funk. It is this really interesting combination of disco, ambient and straight up electronic. The results are simply mesmerizing. The record has the lightness of disco, but the sonic depth of something ambient. The first track "Don't Play Games" really sets the scene: a dark room, a disco ball, a sultry singer and the rest just falls in to place. 80s Electronic plays a big role on the EP totally encompassing the neon glow of the night. But although it's influences are clearly Disco the album still manages to sound fresh and vibrant, just like it would in almost any genre. the record really does sparkle, but almost in a very gritty way. This is music for someone who knows the gutter but can clean up very very well.

Most EPs are just a taste of what is to come, but Nite-Funk feels much more composed and like one work. Each song does not necessarily lead into the next, but they all have this really incredible flow that does not stop. The vocals throughout the record also only have just a hint of autotune on them allowing for the songs to soar when they need to and become more electronic as well. If there is one issue it may be that the songs tend to linger for a little to long. With almost nothing under four and a half minutes, there are times where the songs don't change enough to really keep you interested. The final track "U Can Make Me" sounds a bit like something Janet Jackson would do early in her career and although it is pleasant it does not quite push the envelope far enough to really bring some heat. There is also this issue where the music never really gets big enough, instead Nite-Funk are happy to live in the world of the small and intricate even when the music is demanding more. This record is a great first start, but we need much more to really come to a conclusion about Nite-Funk
