Point Point - Contrastive Focus Reduplication

The electronic music coming out of France this year has been on another level. Madeon and now Point Point are creative very different yet very well done electronic mixes and this EP Contrastive Focus Reduplication is no different. Glitchy in the very best way, Point Point use the voice as a beat and place holder never allowing it to be fully expressed. The focus for this album is definitely on the avante garde here, with songs like "I Woke Up Sad" bringing the brightness of the synth sound but still managing to create a sad state of mind. The very next track however "Smile On Your Face" is right back to the super bubbly dance track but never with a emphasis on bass drops or electronic voices telling you to make "your fucking body move" this record is more subtle and would most likely fall into that IDM category.

As an EP the record is obviously short at just over 16 minutes, but what is there really works and you can feel that this record would make a great extended set. "Life in Grey" is particularly interesting using a variety of instrumentation and a pattern of cuts and stops which really set it apart. Point Point is clearly taking the future music concept by the horns and running with it. Contrastive Focus Reduplication is far more than just another EDM album and does have something to say on the direction of electronic music. Take a listen and hear for yourself the potential of what electronic music can be.
