Troye Sivan - Blue Neighborhood

Have you heard of Ed Sheeran? Than you probably know what Blue Neighborhood by Troye Sivan will sound like. This album doesn't have the analogue musically of Sheeran but makes up for it in electronic prowess. If EDM had a love song sub-genre Sivan would be the poster boy for it. Having gained his fame through Youtube the new generation of listeners are fully on the bandwagon, however the strength of this album is more in concept than in reality. Sure it would be great it there was a barely 20 year old singer songwriter from all around the world who made music at an extremely high level, but that just is not the case. At times the album can sound completely homogeneous without any kind of edge. On "THE QUIET" Sivan says "shit" and it almost comes across as him with a hand over his mouth at the crazy risk saying that means. Where Sheeran can croon and ooze his way into heartfelt emotional songs Sivan is content with staying on the sidelines looking in.

The production on the album however is quite well done. The tracks He uses are huge soundscapes and on their own would really be mind blowing. It is the inclusion of pop lyrics that really detracts from the record. A song like "YOUTH" has huge potential but Troye's delivery is so one note that when the song soars and builds he is not giving it the energy that it deserves. A lot of this can be attributed to his youth, when something works you don't want to change it or step out so why try? This being Troye Sivan's first release the bones of something great are there. If He can stick with his current song structure but tweak some things to improve his delivery there really be something here. It would be super easy to write of Sivan and his music as something you hate, but there is much more within him that I'm sure is going to eventually blow us away, just not yet.
