Magic Sword - Volume 1

More likely than not you have not heard of Magic Sword. That would make sense because the Boise duo have yet to break into the mainstream, but if their aspirations are to be believed that will change very soon. Volume 1, though completely without lyrics, was created to tell an epic fantasy story fraught with battles, druids and the like. It is electronic-sci fi-fantasy-dance-pop that seems tailored more for a movie score than something you want to hear at a night club. However after a few minutes of listening and a couple of drops you realize this is actually really good stuff. This is a group bending the line not only between genres but also between mediums. As seems to be the norm with Fantasy rockers the duo have names for themselves, one being "The Keeper" to further shroud their act in mystery. There is also a comic book that will accompany each one of their albums. All of this could be a real put off for some people who just want their music to be music and that is where things actually start to get interesting; The album is actually really good. Magic Sword's ability to story tell with a song is incredible, but then at times like on "The Way Home" the dance element comes across really well.

Seven Lions would be a close comparison to these guys, bur there is much more of a fantastical element to their music "Kill Them All" being quite possibly the most aggressive and epic at the same time. It is almost like you were sucked into a Galaga game but the world turned into 3D once you got in. The record is long at just over an hour with many of the tracks peaking well over five minutes. Much of the time is spent building on the same beat and often just extending it out into infinity which can become quite annoying. Many of the tracks have a very similar tone so as time goes on they begin to sound the same. What is really great about Volume 1 however is that they are actually going for it. These two had an idea and a plan and have really executed it in an exciting and interesting way. If you ever need a soundtrack to your next D&D party, or some sweet dance tunes for your next all night rave in a forest look no further than Magic Sword.
