filous - Dawn EP

filous
Dawn EP
2015

As electronic music has it's massive push into the mainstream there is bound to be something that pushes back and does something similar but in a totally new way. filous and Dawn is exactly that. The 18 year old Austrian wunderkind takes electronic music and instead of using keys and syths he crafts his version with analogue instruments all of which he actually plays himself. The result is catchy beats and incredible instrumentation that connects on a real visceral level. He isn't doing something that others haven't done before but the timing and perfection of this EP is something to be marveled at. "Dawn" opens the album on a nice easy note but then "How Hard I Try" and "Better Off" bring in the bass notes and kick up the tempo. filous actually reminds me of RAC and has followed a similar path in that he has become popular through his remixes then parlayed that into releasing his own music, and his own music is damn good.

Five tracks is great for an EP but it ends up being such a giant tease. All you want after you listen to this record is more more more. "How Hard I Try" is one of those songs that you just cannot stop listening to, and not just because of it's earworm hook, but because it is good. It is all the more incredible when you learn that filous learned to play at least four instruments from watching Youtube clips. There is potential in every corner of this record and things are only looking up for filous. Listen to Dawn as soon as you can because your friends are going to be telling you about soon enough. Make sure you don't miss the train on this one.
