Project Pablo - There’s Always More At The Store

There's Always More at The Store
2018

This is likely not the typical house album you were looking for. Patrick Holland a Vancouver born DJ now living in Montreal produces light and breezy house that is a delightful break from reality. The stakes aren't high on this record, and instead of driving points home He allows the music to cascade over you like a blanket. The opening track barely moves past background music to a pool party. It is easy enough to please anyone, but not cutting enough to truly make a statement. Everything here slips to the background, as is the case with a lot of house, but the lightness makes it vanish even more so. It feels like music made for art openings and fancy cocktail parties with a bit of an edge. You keep hunting for something tangible to hang on to, a sound or a vibe that really pushes things forward but that just never comes. There is very little progression throughout the record. A song with begin, make a couple of changes and then sort of hang right there for the remainder of the run time. "Last Day" has this piano line that sort of sits there and does nothing but be played over and over again. You would think I was just being a bit silly or taking a shot at the album, but truly the song never changes from this gentle tickling of the keys with some nondescript fuzz in the background.

That is sort of the place you are left with on this EP, comfortable yet boring. Each song sounds pretty nice, and employs some decent tones, but the movement is almost nonexistent. "Less and Less" a song that employs elements of Drum n Bass as well as house fails to do anything with them. It's almost like Holland has no other gears to shift in to and no other music to give us. I wish there was more to say or something else to dig in to but there simply isn't. This is such filler music that it is almost frustrating to listen to after awhile. The ending is almost a relief because you don't have to listen to this record anymore. If you ever see this come up on a playlist or have a chance to listen I would suggesting taking a beat and deciding to move the fuck on. Yeesh.
