Still Waters is the second album from French producer Breakbot and is the definition of Modern Disco. Funky bass lines, breezy synths and four on the floor percussion populate the entirety of this record. However the record is not just made for nostalgia's sake, there are some really fun and modern aspects that don't come straight from the 70s. There are many times on the record where you can feel yourself falling into the groove and completely getting enraptured buy the whole disconess. It is almost right in line with the best of Jamiroquai ("The Sweetest Romance") but just not quite as good. While the album does a great job of being exactly what you expected there is a lack of any sort of surprise. "2Good4Me" does a bit of an R&B bend but it ends up being one of the weakest tracks on the record. Most of the tracks tend to create a great space to groove along to but if you try to dig a little to deep under the surface there really is not much there. This is music for summer fun, not for exploring one's existence in the world, and there is nothing wrong with that.

"My Toy" which is one of the best tracks on the record is also the most airy. You have to go into this song knowing exactly what it is going to be and enjoy it for that. This may seem like I am giving quite a few caveats for liking this record, but when you listen you will understand that coming into this album cold is a recipe for disaster. One of the major issues here is that the really well done tracks are surrounded by so many just OK ones that by the time the next great thing comes around you are already bored with listening to this record. It is hard to stay engaged when the expectation is mediocrity rather than greatness. This record would be great to have in the background amongst socializing and partying but listening to it alone just for fun seems to beyond it's scope. A solid record for a certain setting, but nothing is transcendent here so leave this on the shelf until your next summer BBQ.
