If your ears have been open at all this summer it is likely you've heard Kungs without even knowing it. There was this one song, that sort of hang in the background of life this past year which I never looked up yet enjoyed immensely every time I heard it. It seemed old yet fresh and incredibly celebratory. Well that song was "This Girl" by Kungs and Cookin' with 3 Burners and it is a celebration of life unlike much else that has come out this year. It simply bumps along pulling you into it's orbit of goodness. Kungs took the original song by Cookin with 3 Burners from 2009 and gave it a totally new spin. Usually these types of hits are a one off but this seems to be the style that Kungs has embraced. Bright shining music coupled with light vocals yet there is enough funk thrown in from the music slipping fully into the electronic genre. Time after time Kungs throws in these blaring horns giving his tracks this super warm feeling. The serious look on his face on the album cover does nothing but make the record all the more fun. A song like "You Remain" with vocals from RITUAL has a sentimental bend, but then Kungs throws in this tropical house chorus that keeps the song from being all that serious.

What is all the more incredible about this record is that Valentin Brunel (Kungs) only started releasing music last year and has already been invited on tour with David Guetta. All of this at just under 20 years old is really incredible. More French DJs have been embracing the analogue instrumentation as of late (Filous, Madeon, ect.) and it gives their electronic music this embervesent quality that has been missing from some House music for awhile. the songs on Layers function both as dance tracks, but also the lyrics are nothing to scoff at. There are times where the record can sound a bit repetitive as Kungs has found a lane that really works for him and sticks in it. However at such a young age we really can't expect him to be able to completely change his musical direction at the drop of a hat. "Wild Church" which is the only track without a feature is much more straight down the line House music and ends up being one of the less exciting tracks on the record. What this record really serves as is a thrilling first step. Where the rest of his career goes is up to him but if Layers is any indication, we have a lot to get excited about.
