Galantis - Pharmacy

Galantis
Pharmacy
2015

Pharmacy is the debut album from Swedish producing duo Galantis and is splashy EDM tailor made for the club scene. Most of the tracks have a piano intro into a slow build and drop which gives you just enough time to polish off your drink and get to the dance floor. Songs like "Runaway (U and I)" are perfect for singing loud with your friends as lasers dance above your heads. However don't expect to find much else in the record other than that. If you are looking for something transcendent in Pharmacy it just is not there, this album is about one thing and that is getting you moving and leaving the emotional stuff for someone else. While many people would think this is a bad thing for Galantis they set out with a goal for this record and they totally achieved it. Searching for meaning in everything often is wasted effort and it really is with this album.

The first part of the album is absolutely loaded with driving bass and intense electronics which can only lead to a bit of a let down towards the middle. However Galantis still try and push that intensity and it can become quite grading after some time. This album was made for singles, probably not as a full piece so there is really no sense of flow or through line other than get your ass up and dance. There comes a point where you need to decide if an album is an important one or a successful one. Pharmacy probably would never been described as "important" but thinking it is not totally successful is just incorrect. If you are trying to get people to shake their hips drop the lights, put on a strobe and let them fall into a Galantis hole.
