Curren$y - Canal Street Confidential

While low energy is not often an attriubte you look for in rap music New Orleans hip hop artists Curren$y has cornered the market. His rhymes spill out of his mouth without much care or forethought. It is almost stream of consciousness even though you know there was a great deal of work put into the lyrics. Almost all of Canal Street Confidential comes across this way, allowing the music to sort of slowly flow out rather than attempt to make some kind of banger splash. It never takes a laid back trap style instead Curren$y employs much more old school type rhyme structures and the result is a complete sense of vibe. The beats on the record is actually incredibly beautiful. "What's Up" in particular has an electronic backbone that gets muddled in a guitar solo later on but it's delicate and intricate sound is not lost. The idea not to make something that is going to be a hit in the club allows for Curren$y to focus on almost anything else and the album does benefit from that. The record is also star studded featuring Future, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla $ign who all add pretty decent verses.

The low energy however is unable to carry the record throughout. Eventually things get to a point where you can't actually enjoy it anymore. The album becomes momentous, each lyric is so close both in delivery and substance that the thought of listening to it again is daunting at best. Each track is also so similar in theme that picking one out from another by their lyrics would be almost impossible. However there really is something there in the beats, they are really out of the norm of what is going on with rap today but they are so fresh. There are quite a few tracks on the record that do have great potential but after listening it is hard to imagine the way it currently is making any kind of grand impact. Take a listen and enjoy the structure just don't be expected to be blown away.
