Vomee - Aquarius

Vomee
Aquarius
2015

Aquarius is an interesting take on the electronic genre. At times it has lush backgrounds like on the title track, but what would be considered the singing aspect of the song (a synth playing) is very minimal giving it an almost retro feel. As a techno record it is wholly electronic and makes almost no attempt to sound organic which adds to a feeling of sadness that seems to permeate every second of sound. The thumping beat of the bass however will always keep you grounded and makes sure that dancing to this record will always be tantamount. The constant bass allows Vomee to explore in the high and mid range sprinkling in all kinds of sounds that you may not expect. This is the stuff of late night dark warehouses, not the kind that while have everyone jumping up and down, but the kind that have you transfixed swaying side to side. The music is very specific in that way, It has a real intention and is not interested in moving away from that goal. About 3/4 of the way through the second track "Pensiero" is Vomee really finds a nice deep groove and let's that ride out all the way to the end.

Aquarius however is not without it's pitfalls. At times the music can sound very thin devoid of any real body or weight. This does take away from the experience sort of giving the music a transient vibe, here today gone tomorrow. There is always this thought in the back of your head while listening that something really cool is going on. Like getting into a party that is way above your pay grade where all the cool shit is happening. However with techno that is quite normal, the thought that we are doing something better than anyone else, and we know it. Aquarius however does not have that air of superiority, it is quite approachable and cool at the same time. The transfers on the record could definitely use some work, "Rising Sun" into "Shinobi" is almost laughable in it's utter abruptness. "Shinobi" by far the darkest track leaves you with a sense of dread heading back into the real world. If you are prepared for a journey to the underbelly of afterhours and darkness than give Aquarius a spin. You may not escape...
