The Darkness - Last of Our Kind
The Darkness
Last of Our Kind
2015
The Darkness have always been a band that existed out of time. Half dick joke, half 70s cocaine and acid fueled rock they have always done whatever they wanted bucking any trend or decade that came their way. The Darkness took a genre like metal and arena rock that always took itself so very serious and decided it was OK to have fun, fine to rock and laugh. Last of Our Kind is a band coming off two just OK albums (Hard for anyone to follow Permission to Land), a few rehab stints and more than a few drummer changes and it's fucking glorious. For a band that have always been incredible musicians, great songwriters and can rock any house they see Last of Our Kind is a Phoenix signaling that The Darkness may have been hiding for awhile but the soul was always burning inside their chest.
The album is a perfect mix of light and dark, laughter and misery. Instead of laughing everything off The Darkness are leaving the Spinal Tap a bit behind and writing some really heartfelt songs all the while keeping those fun arena jams in their back pocket ready to drop on you at a moments notice. "Sarah O'Sarah" feels like something quite real but it still has that signature Darkness sound. Lsat of Our Kind is a sign of good things to come for The Darkness, and deservedly so. The Darkness have been pushing and pushing a sound that outside of them really doesn't exist and it is about damn time people got on board. The best part of Last of Our Kind? It means another tour for the boys to show up and melt your damn face!
