Walk Off The Earth - Sing It All Away
Walk Off The Earth
Sing It All Away
2015
There is a fine line between anthemic pop and a drinking song. Both are catchy, everyone loves to sing them loud and they make great Karaoke tracks but the real question comes down to whether or not something is a good song or just a catchy one. Walk Off The Earth balance right on the line of this question. At times they sound like great Indie Pop perfect for moving and singing but then on the next track the devolve into something so sugary it hurts the ears. The Australian group Sheppard suffer from the same issue on their album Bombs Away, they are right on the edge of making something really great but instead they lean on the Pop side of things washing away any type of cred they may have had. Walk Off The Earth do this in a different way on Sing it All Away, where Sheppard go pop they go sing-a-longy. Most of the tracks, partially because they have both male and female vocals, sound like they are meant to be sung in a large group. Great for touring and live shows, but it feels citchy on an album.
That is one of the most difficult things about this record, there really are great aspects but there are also some things that just don't make any sense. Probably the most popular track is "Home We'll Go (Take My Hand)" which realyl does have some great heart to it and the Steve Aoki remix included at the end of the record is a fun departure for both Aoki and Walk Off The Earth. There really is something there with Sing it All Away but finding it is hard. Trying to make sense of why singing along with your friends to something catchy is a great time is not really definable it just is. Is Sing it All Away life changing? No. But will it be something that you can enjoy on a base level? Maybe yes. Give it a shot and tell me what you think.
