Hunter Hunted - Ready For You
Hunter Hunted
Ready qFor You
2015
Hunter Hunted have been on a meteoric sun in the past couple of years which is so very 2015. It wasn't a smash single or years and years of grinding it out on tour that broke this band, it was a number of random occurrences (being played in Starbucks, being on an Ashton Kutcher Live Stream, getting noticed by the talent booker of Conan O'Brien at their first show) that allowed them to put this new record Ready For You together. Hunter Hunted are a bit hard to pin down but the overarching theme is a light brand of anthemic Indie-Pop. They definitely tow the line between Indie and Pop where songs like "Lucky Day" land closer to the Pop side of things and "Operating" more Indie. Bright guitars and keys prevail throughout this record giving it a very light and airy feel, there is not much to get you down. The soaring vocals bring the whole anthem thing around and is clearly what they are going for here. However when Hunter Hunted try and get to sing-a-longy it often doesn't come across to well.
"Dora Maar" is one of those tracks where it seems they are trying a bit hard to create something deep and meaningful but in the end it falls flat. The tracks where the toms are used the most seem to be the ones a little to full of themselves ("Dora Maar", "Gentle Folks"), the bright harmonies put against harsh deep drums don't really work for this group at all. A track like "Float" is when Hunter Hunted are right in their wheelhouse, a blend of contemporary pop and an Indie sensibility. As a duo Hunter Hunted do create a very rich sound, they never fall into the duo idea of keeping things small just because. They allow their music to fill the room and do so in a very smooth way. This album is in no way life changing but a really nice first effort from Hunter Hunted. Check it out.
