The Internet - Ego Death

The Internet
Ego Death
2015

Lumping The Internet in with Frank Ocean or Miguel would be a mistake. They are part of a new wave of R&B that has of the past few years come into the mainstream, but their sound is so different and so unique that lumping them in anywhere would be a loosing proposition. More than anything they are an extension of the Neo-Soul movement pioneered by The Roots and John Legend in the early 2000s. But their music is also totally new, something all their own. They may borrow from Jazz, Funk, Soul and R&B but this music make it's own impression a style unto itself. Ego Death is the best album to date, with each record The Internet have grown and expanded their horizons. Ego Death is the culmination of the band finally coming together and becoming more than a singer songwriter with backing, now they are a full fledged group. Syd's singing on this album is so effortless, it's rolling around in bed after a great nights sleep, it's the slight sound of jazz in a smoke filled room. Nothing on this record feels forced, everything including the occasional rap verse is fuily organic and real.

Where a great deal of R&B can fall into sexual overtones, that never really happens with Ego Death. Instead this record is more about love and finding it rather that consummating it. It is that time when you are deciding to leave the bar with someone else, not what happens after. As in all funk music the bass and drums are deep and rich with splashy guitar and piano accompaniments/ Each track finds it's own unique groove and gets so deep into it that you just want to close your eyes and experience what's happening to you. Much like the title suggests Ego Death takes you out of whatever bullshit you have around you and allows you to full experience the moment you are in, quite the claim but listen and I think you will agree it holds true. Get on The Internet.
