BOY - We Were Here

The ladies from BOY have an interesting way of making small scale music sound really really big. The title track of the new record We Were Here uses instruments and tones that in the hands of other groups would sound like a quiet indie song, but they make it big enough to fill any room. You could hear this music in a tiny coffee house or on the largest concert stages. One of the best parts of BOY however is their introspective moments. Their music is highly catchy but still has that aspect that makes people feel connected to what the band is talking about. "Hotel" is about their previous world tour and the isolation that comes from being alone in a hotel night after night. It is something that everyone can understand, being isolated from the world you are used to. The music of BOY is quite feminine a la Purity Ring, but their sound is not as electronic and has more of a grounding in classic instrumentation. Most of the album features a touch of synth but you would be hard pressed to find it without listening quite close. It is more of a soft aspect added to the record than anything else.

At only 34 minutes and Nine tracks the record is quite short but it's impact is very solid. Because BOY has such a distinct tone to their music though many of the tracks can somewhat blend together. There is less to differentiate each song which on one hand means the album has a concise clear vision, but on the other means you feel like you are listening to one thing for a half hour. The vocals on We Were Here teeter on the verge of twee throughout the album but it never jumps the edge into full tweeness and the music can really hold up against some scrutiny. The tightness of this record really sets it apart as well, there is very little fluff. "Into the Wild" has a remotely long intro, but the rest of the record is pure pop format, in and out. We Were Here really is an excellent record, from a group doing excellent things. Give it a listen and see what you think.
