Pegboard Nerds - Pink Cloud EP
Pegboard Nerds
Pink Cloud EP
2015
Bright Electro-pop doesn't even begin to describe this EP from the Pegboard Nerds. Each track is a new level of sunshine shining bright on those who take a listen. If you are looking for any kind of edge, minus some pushing bass, this record is not for you. Even the vocals push the brightness forward. A funny thing about the Pink Cloud EP though, you really don't mind it's sweetness, for awhile. The tones are interesting and the lyrics in general follow the same EDM tropes of positive energy and pursuing love, but their light hearted approach really sets the EP apart. It is not until the last track "End is Near (Fire in the Hole VIP)" that the bass finally drops hard and the pace really quickens. You could hear "End is Near" really banging hard in a club or festival setting, but the rest of the album just does not have enough behind it to be at that level. There are some solid pieces here, but the execution never comes together in a real way.
Pink Cloud is relatively derivative from other that is out there today in the EDM world. Besides a few moments of interesting approaches you would be hard pressed to pick this out of the extremely crowded field of EDM DJs. The one really interesting thing about this album is that Pegboard Nerds have dedicated most if not all of the proceeds to the Fuck Cancer charity, which adds a nice degree of depth from the Scandinavian duo. However selflessness does not a good album make. Donate to Fuck Cancer, but you can probably skip this record.
