Dan Deacon - Gliss Riffer
Dan Deacon
Gliss Riffer
2015
I had never heard of Dan Deacon before this review. His newest record Gliss Riffer is an out and out art piece and exploration of what exactly electronica means. The opening songs being with repetitive tones, layered yet polished tracks and gargled singing, almost suggesting that the words shouldn't and don't mean anything. Deacon is almost daring the listener to say his music is pop, though he knows he is trying to do much more than make a catchy song. This idea does break down in the later songs as the music devolves into just super monotonous tones that seem to never end. The last two tracks are over 15 minutes long and never seem to start or end anywhere. They really take away from what is otherwise a pretty great album.
I really like what Dan Deacon is doing here. He is trying something new and while part of it is quite successful, the second piece just never lands, as art or anything else.Gliss Riffer is absolutely worth a listen though, maybe just stop at track six.
