Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit

What comes across on a first listen of  Sometimes I Sit and Think, Sometimes I Just Sit is a profound sense on honesty. Courtney Barnett, despite her young age, writes like a seasoned rock and roll star. She isn't afraid to do what she thinks is cool, what she thinks sounds great. This album is super pared down rock an roll, deadpan singing, guitar rifts and heavy snare drum runs. When the music really kicks in Barnett never lets it effect her, she just keeps singing they way she wants to. I like the fact that she is not trying to hide her accent (She's Australian) it adds to the honesty of the record. The lyrics really mean a great deal to her, it's not just about writing a catchy song its about saying something that are of consequence to her. This comes across really well because her voice remains almost the same throughout the album so the words come through.

There are some weak spots in the Record. For one, most of the songs seem a bit one note, the album works well together however it is often hard to differentiate each song from the next. The few times that the songs do really pick up a fast pace or change direction it only lasts a moment then its gone. This leads to a predictable sound throughout the record, which isn't necessarily a bad thing it just doesn't give the listener that sense of surprise when something blows you away. However these little critiques do not take away from an otherwise really great and really original album. Turn on "Depreston" and take a cruise in your car with the windows down. Prepare to be delighted, and fall in love with Courtney Barnett.
