Cold Fronts - Forever Whatever

Cold Fronts
Forever Whatever
2015

With Cold Front's new album Forever Whatever we find him making a jumble of indie rock, pop punk and a few other genres to create something that is quite refreshing. At times he sounds like The Strokes with his lo-fi attitude then on songs like "Energy Waster" you could swear you are listening to Millencolin. The two should not fit together, but somehow on this record they actually do. The energy coming from Cold Fronts' lead singer drives this album throughout setting it on fire and then leaning back to watch it burn. The final track "Darling" descends into a full on rock meltdown which is very fitting for the pace that is kept on the rest of the record, at this point you are ready to smash some shit yourself. Despite the great energy displayed here it feels like everything is just on the surface, like you could listen to this record enjoy it but not have it effect you in any way. It is an odd proposition but it seems to fit Forever Whatever almost perfectly.

The songs on this album are really well crafted, but after one listen it becomes hard to distinguish one from the other. There are few few breaks on the record which ads a live element but it doesn't give the listener a chance to take a breath and process what they have heard. The music doesn't sweep into a room or fade away, instead it busts down the door, hits you in the head and runs away. There is also a lack of emotional depth for this kind of record. You would expect some real emotion in these lyrics, which would really make it great, instead it just comes across as a bit cursory. If you are ready to get the party started with a bunch of pop-punk alums who only listen to indie rock now Forever Whatever is the record for you. However the rest of us can probably pass this one over.
