The Decemberists - Florasongs

The Decemberists
Florasongs
2015

The Decemberists again you say? Your god damn right The Decemberists. After just releasing an album earlier this year the band is back with this EP of songs that came out of the recording sessions for What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. Florasongs follows almost the exact same vein as all the other Decemberists albums, Americana and flowery victorianesque language. For some people this music has been done and done again and the thought of more of the same from the band is more than a trying possibility. However this little record is so pretty as is almost all of the Decemberists work. There is just a great emotional component to this record that connects with you right away. This album is far less old school Americana and more college rock which gives it a bit of distance from it's LP big brother. "Why Would I Now?" is probably the best track on the album and the most classically Decemberists.

At only 10 minutes long even for an EP this is quite short. Usually The Decemberists will kill you with track after track, but this in particular leaves you wanting more. When listening to Florasongs it is pretty evident why these tracks did not make the cut for the full album but they all are particularly nice in their own way. For the faithful this will be a nice placeholder until they come back around, but for the haters out there this record is only going to be more fuel for the fires. You've got 10 minutes give this album a listen, you can help but feel better once you did.

6.9 out of 10
