Vulfpeck - Thrill of the Arts

Vulfpeck
Thrill of the Arts
2015

Vulfpeck are one of those little gems that you occasionally stumble upon. Their live show is legendary for it's energy, musicianship and all out good vibes. The band often has a rotating cast bringing in different players on an as needed basis which adds a sense of surprise track after track. The music itself is funk driven with the bass lines being center stage for almost all the tracks. The album is also gritty, with very little production outside of live recording in studio. The band despite their clear attention to detail and perfection allows the music to explore whatever space it may exist in. The funk is also so unifying, you would be hard pressed to find someone that does't at least enjoy funk music and when it is done at this high of a level it's almost impossible not to get deep into the groove. The rhythm section serves as the backbone that allows the keys and guitar to really get loose and splashy. But, don't think that means that the bass and drums don't shine just a brightly because Joe Dart on bass may just be the absolute best thing about this band. He is next level and brings that quality to a group which is already operating in a zone that few bands can obtain.

Vulfpeck have also made headlines due to their off the field shenanigans. In 2014 the put out an album on Spoify that was totally silent called Sleepify. Their shows are charged with them giving direction to the audience and scolding them for not dancing enough. They pop up at shows, drop some funk and flee the scene. It is an interesting way for a band to make a living. The last track on the Thrill of the Arts is a guided meditation that begins with the face and moves to expound on the ass. The tongue is firmly in the cheek (pun intended) on this one and just further personifies the levity of this band. Despite the fact that funk has had it's day they are not going to stop pushing until everyone realizes just how great it is, and we should thank them for that. Check out Thrill of the Arts and go to a Vulfpeck show, you will not regret it.
