Boosie BadAzz - Touchdown 2 Cause Hell

Boosie BadAzz
Touchdown 2 Cause Hell
2015

With his first release since spending 52 months in prison Boosie BadAzz has come back on the scene with Touchdown 2 Cause Hell. The first half of the record is spent dealing with his time in prison, the struggles and what it means to finally be free. BadAzz also beat a murder charge which held the penalty of death if convicted so the overarching theme of impending death permeates the whole album. His time in jail however did not force Boosie to go totally introspective, much of the first half of the record is posturing, gun wielding and completely wilding out. He may be a changed man in some ways, but celebrating the street and a life of crime have not totally left Boosie BadAzz. The single off the record "Like a Man" is quite possibly one of the weakest tracks, the beat is Caribbean steel drum esque and the verses are total boasting start to finish with no real sense of personal introspection.

The posturing stops however once the album reaches the track "Black Heaven" featuring J. Cole. On this track Boosie explores what famous African Americans might be up to in heaven today, kinda similar in scope to Common and Macy Grey's "Ghetto Heaven". The rest of the album is abstract and interesting with tons of introspection, better rhymes and beats that blow the first half out of the water. Boosie BadAzz is similar to 2Pac in that he straddles that line between thug and poet. At one moment He is talking about guns, fighting and drugs then a few tracks later He is apologizing for all of it and wanting to change his ways. It is an interesting artistic development for a man hellbent on celebrating his new freedom, while still holding on to his hood roots.

6/7 out of 10
