Heirs - And So I Watch You From Afar

Heirs
And So I Watch You From Afar
2015

And So I Watch You From Afar is a complete and total surprise. I've never heard of Heirs before i checked out this album so going in I had no clue of what to expect. Their music is anthemic alt rock with great solo guitar licks sprinkled in throughout. The guitars come straight out of the 1980s but never feel dated, everything about their sound is new and fresh while not neglecting that a past does exist for these types of songs. Each track feels epic but it never takes itself to seriously, almost as if Heirs wants you to know that it's just music. Heirs is a their best when they are just playing and letting the music do the singing for them. The couple tracks that do have singing on them are probably the weaker songs on the album.

The one thing that struck me as odd was the production. Heirs' sound is so big but that scale for some reason doesn't translate to the headphones. There is a space sense that seems to be missing, you want to feel like you are listening to this album in an arena or outdoor venue dotted with stars, but instead it feels small. This doesn't take much away from the record though, just a small change that could really take it to another level. If you are ever lacking in energy put this record on because Heirs has more than enough that they are willing to give you. And So I Watch You From Afar is a really great record and one not to be missed.

8.5 out of 10
