Django Django - Born Under Saturn

Django Django
Born Under Saturn
2015

Critics today are quick to praise the use of drum machines and beach boysesque vocals. The tweer the better it seems in a lot of cases. Django Django's new album Born Under Saturn is twee with just the slightest edge. You'll be hard pressed to find many crescendos or a break from the vocal harmonies throughout the record, which is...odd. The album never really sets itself up as something substantial, it is more concerned with creating complex musical arrangements proving what Django Django is capable of. The entire album seems to be completely devoid of feeling creating an almost sterile environment for musical exploration which doesn't bode well for the listener trying to connect to the record.

Django Django are what our idea of the future would sound like, almost like they are out of sceince fiction. Is this a good thing for 2015? Not really. "4000 Years" is the one song where thing become more melodic and you are able to hear something truly interesting and relatable. The beginning and ending of the record are definitely where the better tracks are, the middle is just kind of a never ending one note sound. When I want to sum Born Under Saturn I keep coming back to the quote from Jurassic Park "but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.". I don't know if Django Django "Should".
