Beach House - Depression Cherry

Beach House
Depression Cherry
2015

Beach House much like their name have a very transient quality. Their music ebbs and flows like the tides, coming in and making an impact but then slowly falling away. It is a beautiful dance that their sound creates, especially on this album Depression Cherry. There is very little sense of needing anything to be one way or another. Instead the music is allowed to just exist as it is, to bend and move wherever the wind may take it. You usually don't hear much from this band, they come in with an album every five years or so, blow some minds and fade back away. Depression Cherry is so darn good that it's nine track run time is almost insulting. You need more and they aren't willing to let you have it. It is quite an incredible thing to hear. Dream-pop is the term that was tailor made for this record, it is almost as fleeting and beautiful as a dream. With an album like this you would expect to find a great deal of musical experimentation or odd sounds but that just is not the case. This record is classic in its form, the function is where you can find all the delightful risks being taken.

This album begs to be played out in the open and shared, eyes closed and melting away. Depression Cherry takes the repetitive nature of trance music and transforms it into indie rock and the results are incredible. They allow the music to continue if need be and if not it can just fade away. Just like life, sadness permeates this record. Despite the highest highs there is always a low waiting around the corner to take you away or set you on a different path. We can't control what happens, so we have to accept or fade and just roll with the punches as they come. It may sound like a lofty way to describe an album, but it absolutely fits, they are harnessing some pure emotion and giving it straight to you via sound. I can't recommend this album high enough and take a risk and explore some of their older records as well, don't be scared it may just change your life.
