Mac Miller - GO:OD AM

Mac Miller
GO:OD AM
2015

Mac Miller is a hard one to pin down. On one hand his album GO:OD AM is filled with strong throwback beats and He has a decent rhyming rhythm for those sick of vibe and trap music dominating the airwaves. However his lyrics are plainly put, kinda weak. His themes are quite pedestrian and He follows the same ol same of drugs, women and former poverty. You find yourself bobbing your head along with his songs but when you actually listen that bob turns into a shake. For the most part Mac speaks out of the side of his mouth and with a drawl that would make even Rick Ross look on with disdain. There are times when he is funny or even clever, but the album is meant to be funny so it just seems... odd. But, the beats. Oh these beats. It gives you scents of College Dropout, which is some of the highest praise when it comes to hip hop. His selection of beats shows a vast hip hop knowledge and a respect for what has come before, which kind of makes it all the more disappointing when the lyrics don't sync up.

This record does show the complete freedom that Miller now has. The pressure is off for almost the entire album and He is able to do what he wants, something that does suit the rapper. Without pressure to make club bangers a more organic hip hop comes through, even if it is not the best lyrically. There are a few instances where Mac allows his requests and mistakes from the booth come through and it is classic Hip Hop, something that has been missing, but it really should not be coming from him. You really want to like this album, like really bad, but in the end it just slightly misses the mark. Give Mac a shot, but it will not change your life, or maybe it will who the hell knows.
