Mykki Blanco presents C-ORE
2015

If you aren't prepared for Mykki Blanco before you listen to this new album then you are going to be in for quite the odd trip. C-ORE is trip hop to the furthest extent of word. Mykki is a multi gendered performance artist who uses the fringe as an ally when creating these devilish beats. The album itself seems to encapsulate fear itself having track after track of darkness and despair. But even then there is still hip hop pulling you back into the record. At times the hip hop is even pretty good, but it is surrounded by music that is off putting today the least. More often than not the album sides on just sounds being played over and over. There are keys against a car door, acorns being stomped on and other oddities that populate the record. Even when you are starting to enjoy the rap, Mykki challenges you to not like what's going on.

That seems to be the real message here, challenging authority. What does it mean to be a rapper, what is darkness? These are the things that Mykki and the other collaborators on this project are looking to do. A real standout on the album is Psychoegyptian. His two tracks are the hardest hip hop while still staying on he message of the album. He even channels a bit of Kanye on "Lullaby", taking out his aggression over drum beats and synth hits. Don't think you will ever get a moment to breath on this album it's just not going to happen. The darkness comes in think and never lets up making it a have hard album to even listen to. Sometimes however challenging is what music and art needs, Mykki Blanco is more than willing to provide that challenge. Will you like it? Who knows, that may not even be the point.
