Roseau - Salt

Over the years Big Data has pumped out more female singers on a Prince level, yet more in the Indie realm and less in the former girlfriend level. Roseau falls into that category and her debut album Salt follows a pattern of minimalist electronic tones and bells punctuated by her distant voice. It's almost as if she is singing into a void and rather than scream the words out to you she is hoping that by some cosmic miracle they make their way to you. Just our luck they actually have. The space in between seems to be Roseau's major focus on this record. Allowing the music to slip into the openness of silence is a real strength here. The words just kind of exist as they may. There is a real cosmic attribute to the sound she creates whether intended or not, this album could easily accompany you as you hurtle through the void on some kind of distant mission. It also adds to the loneliness that this record creates, it's as if Roseau made this record just for herself and the only connection she makes is on a purely singular path.

The description thus far may seem heavy handed but once you listen it will all make sense. On "Grab" she lets loose a little rap that just adds a hint on whimsy to the track which otherwise would be dark and depressive. The one weakness on the album is also one of the main points, its minimalism. At times you left searching for so much more from each track, but that crescendo or build never comes. There are very few payoffs of surprises on the record, after you hear the first verse you can pretty much know where the rest of the tracks going to go. If you are looking for something interesting and new then Roseau's Salt is the album for you. Give it a listen and take a journey with this young artist.
