Blur - The Magic Whip

The Magic Whip sees a reunion of blur that has been long awaited. Though it seems like the band members' other projects like the Gorillaz for example have seeped their way into this album. Like the album cover suggests the majority of the record has an Asian feel including travels, Terracotta Warriors and many other themes that are the focus of this new record. What's missing for me is the sense of urgency and aggression. Those yelled lyrics like on "Song 2" have been replaced with dreamy floating tracks devoid of a need to get something out and rather happy to let the tracks just meander where ever they may go. It is an interesting turn of Blur, though I'm not sure if its the best.

I am in no way hating on bands taking a turn for the slow (See my praise of Beck's Latest record) but this change just feels a bit odd. One thing that has gone no where is Damon Albarn's voice. It is still so gritty yet perfect, it really is one of the great rock voices. You can see why he has so many side projects, people need those pipes! With The Magic Whip Blur aren't kicking in the door with their return instead they are easing the public back into listening to them. I expect this will not be the last or the final version of Blur we hear.
