Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

There is a whole hell of a lot going on with this album. Each track is absolutely massive with the shortest one being over six minutes. This wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for the fact that much of this time comes from ambient noise, random banging and the same riff being played over and over again. It's as if the band couldn't agree on the direction the song was going to go so they might as well play it again and again. It not only makes for a grading and frustrating listen, but also puts the listener in a situation where you either just give up on the track or go with them deeper and deeper into their strange world of noise.

There really is not an instance where this album makes sense or comes together as a well crafted record. It's jumbled, over long (which is saying something for a four track recording) and lacks a real sense of what it's trying to say. I really would not recommend this album to anyone, because I can't figure out what they are trying to do with it. For now it just sits there waiting for someone or something to trim it down and polish it into something concise.
