The Staves - If I Was

The Staves
If I Was
2015

The trio of singing sisters otherwise known as The Staves have released their second full length album If I Was and it really is something quite different and elegant. If you have never heard The Staves think the Dixie Chicks meet The Decemberists however leaning far closer to The Decemberists musically and the Chicks vocally. It's like a beautiful woman whispering something sweetly in your ear, its a melancholy journey through heartbreak and despair, its something true and some real all at the same time. This album is haunting in its ability to reach a deep part of your soul and pull something out you never thought might be there. What I really enjoyed was the restraint, there were so many moments where the record could become something poppy, but instead The Staves held fast to their idea on what the album should be and it was a masterful stroke.

The songs off of If I Was are so pretty you almost forget the substance that is behind them, but the lyrics pull you back. "Don't You Call Me Anymore" is an ode to a breakup gone bad and a friendship lost, but ends in an acceptance of the things that are just slightly out of our control. If I Was is a real step forward for The Staves and is a release that can really do big things for them. If you give The Staves a shot I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
