The Griswolds - Be Impressive

The Griswolds
Be Impressive
2014

The debut album from The Griswolds Be Impressive is a exploration of the line between Indie Pop and straight sweet teen pop music. For the most part it doesn't seem to ever really hit, the songs are a bit catchy, the lyrics ok but nothing stands out as overly great on the album. The use of the synth is so overwhelming throughout the whole album that it overpowers any of the analogue instruments and the sound becomes super thin and high pitched. There is little to no bottom end throughout the whole album which leaves the listener looking for that bass to ground the whole song in something.

One of the really jarring things from the record is the use of the word "fuck". It is peppered throughout the album even appearing in the chorus of "Beware the Dog". While I really do not care what so ever if someone cusses on their album it is so out of place on this record and just feels really off. It completely takes me out of the song. The one bright spot for me was "Thread the Needle" where the slow things down and really craft an interesting song. One song does not save this record from cliche lyrics and overly synthy music tracks. It's a miss for me.

5 out of 10
