Ludacris - Ludaversal

Ludacris
Ludaversal
2015

By his own admission Ludacris has not put out an album in probably to long. Movies and other engagements have kept him out of the game for over 5 years so Ludaversal is his battering ram back into the scene. In some ways it is extremely successful; when Luda is talking shit about his detractors or on a pure banger track he is almost untouchable. "Ludaversal Intro" is a stream of consciousness an unending attack on anyone who has spoken ill of Mr. Bridges. There is no chorus and hardly any breaks just pure Ludacris giving you every ounce of what He has, and that is only the intro! The first five tracks follow almost this same pattern and they are great, truly some of his best work yet. The breakdown however, as it always has been with Ludacris, is when he tries to slow it down or do something really heartfelt. Those songs just don't play to his strengths, Ludacris is best when he is controversial, best when he is aggressive, best when he does not give one single shit.

Ludaversal is a super solid album. Ludacris brings back that southern swagger that has been missing from the rap scene for awhile. It doesn't seem like the rap world has passed Ludacris by but it does seem like he is coming from a place that really doesn't exist the way it use to. His style is his own but I don't know if it fits or competes with the J. Coles or Kendricks of the world. That is why I think it is better to leave this album on its own, something apart and something to have fun with. Let's all just be happy that we have some new Luda to try (and fail miserably) and memorize.

7.4 out of 10
