Christine and the Queens - Saint Claude

Christine and the Queens
Saint Claude
2015

Christine and the Queens are pretty difficult to pin down. At one moment this might be electronic trippy ambient tunes, then in the next second it is straight up Indie rock. She is singing in perfect beautiful English then switches to French without missing a beat. Most of what Saint Claude is about seems odd and unapproachable,"iT" seems to be about someone wanting a sex change, but the music draws you in and you are absolutely right there with her. Each one of the 5 tracks on the EP really turns what Pop music can be on its head and each one is really really great. I found myself really falling in love with Saint Claude from just a cursory listen. The music is never overly aggressive or loud, it sort of steps right on the line of rocking out but never crosses it, just leaves you there on the edge wanting more and more.

Christine and the Queens clearly have a knack for creating really beautiful understated music. Saint Claude is a great first step on a journey which now doubt will produce some truly experimental and pretty pop music. You should get your shit together and get this record, you will not regret it.
