Calexico - Edge of the Sun

Calexico
Edge of the Sun
2015

Whenever you hear about country or folk music it's usually from the South or Nashville. Calexico breaks that stereotype and brings it to the South West. Blending Indie Folk and Mexican music  doesn't sound like a match made in heaven but Calexico have been doing it for years and do make pretty great music. Their newest release Edge of the Sun was inspired by by three cities Coyoacán (In Mexico), Los Angeles and Athens, GA and each bring their own spirit to the record. The tracks can vary from slow deep journey tunes to lighthearted romps through the South East. At times the record can feel disjointed because each song really is distinct and the only grounding factor is its real feel for what Americana can be.

"Tapping on the Line" however is a real great track. It is vastly improved by Neko Case singing a beautiful backup vocal which gives it a real sense of heart and soul. It is sad in its beauty and its longing for love through a phone line. Definitely my favorite from the album. The next track though breaks into a drum machine version of a mariachi song, which is not only jarring it is also a real turn off. Every time Calexico gives you something truly beaitiful they also give you something quite rough to listen to, but that is part of actually trying to make something different. They are not all always hits. I will be going back again and again and listening to "Tapping on the Line", but I may skip the rest of the album.
