I think most of my peers know Dwight Yoakam more for his acting chops than his musical ability. "You shut your mouth when you're talking to me" (Wedding Crashers) has been a part of my vocabulary for some time. However, Yoakam has been making music for decades and in the country scene it is really really good music. Second Hand Heart is a real celebration of honky tonk type music. It is loud, fun and raucous while still having a ton of heart. As most Country music is Second Hand Heart is acoustic guitar driven at which Yoakam is clearly a master. This record is no fluke or cash grab, clearly Dwight Yoakam still wants to make music that matters to him and music that says something about where he is at in his life.

This album really is not geared for the young. Second Hand Heart is about having gone through some shit and coming out on the other side...only to find a bit more shit. It's sad in its love lost lyrics, but the music is so dancy and fun that it is hard not to smile. Anyone that gives this album a real listen will find something they relate to in it, but I doubt many people will give it the shot it deserves.
