Laura Welsh - Soft Control

Laura Welsh
Soft Control
2015

Laura Welsh has an incredible voice and a great sense of musical space. She fills every inch of Soft Control with a genre bending sound that is a times big and bold but also quiet and understated.Though there is an epicness in the scale of the music, Welsh manages to keep it under control. The music is quite minimized and beautiful, it never gets bigger than it needs to be for the exact moment. There is also a hypnotic quality, you just get lost in what is coming into your ears but in the best way possible. There are so many opportunities in this album where she can take the easy way and make something catchy but she doesn't she holds to an idea that what she is making has weight.

Her writing is also quite impeccable. Lines like "Sink in to soft control/make me numb make me whole/ cause these wounds can not heal" show a deep inner struggle and a connection with the words she is putting into this album. I can certainly see many of these tracks being on soundtracks in the upcoming future, they just evoke that type of emotional response you get when watching a movie. Check out Soft Control you will not be disappointed.
