MNEK
Small Talk e.p.
2015

Is it R&B, is it Dance, is it Pop? MNEK's EP Small Talk has an identity crisis, but not in any sort of bad way. Instead He brings together genres to create an early 90's motownphilly inspired record that can be played in the club or...well mostly just in the club. The single "Every Little Word" is the track most tied to that early 90s R&B, this song could be on a Boyz II Men album and would not be out of place at all. The rest of the tracks follow more of a standard dance record path. The thing about this EP is there is not anything overtly wrong or right about. His singing is good, the tracks are well produced, but in the end nothing stands out one way or another. Small Talk more just exists as a background to whatever else is going on in your world.

In the clubbing world this isn't such a bad thing, tracks you can dance to but don't necessarily leave an impression. There is no way that these tracks aren't fun, they just are not impactful and don't really leave me wanting more. If you are looking to shake your ass to a little 90s delight by all means put this on, but I don't think you will keep coming back for more.
