Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves

Modest Mouse
Strangers to Ourselves
2015

Modest Mouse have been and will always be Modest Mouse. They have a style that is uniquely their own and i like that. I like that their music all at once sounds like cutting edge indie rock but you also feel like it would work fine on an old timey pirate ship. Stranger to Ourselves doesn't do much to take them away from that style and works perfectly well within it. The songs are well put together and the whole album really works. However I find myself for the most part kind of bored. There are a few outliers "The Ground Walks, with Time in a Box" "Of Course We Know" and "Lampshades on Fire" but the other tracks just seem a bit one note. This however makes the album an easy listen from start to finish.

"The Ground Walks, With Time in a Box" is a really great song. This could easily be the single but for some reason it sits at #6 on the tracklist. Is this a life changing or mind blowing album? No. However is it in anyway bad? No. This is just an example of some pretty good tunes on a pretty good album. I can't find glaring flaws or soaring triumphs. Absolutely worth a listen though and there is no doubt that some of these tracks will go down as Modest Mouse's best.

6.9 out of 10
