Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear

Father John Misty
I Love You, Honeybear
2015

Father John Misty confounds and blows the usual folk tropes out of the water. One minute you think he is completely honest and bare, then the next he is cracking you up with his turn of phrase or a joke. The music on I Love You, Honeybear is absolutely beautiful, clean, crisp folk music and the lyrics are nothing like that. They are boastful and often dirty, the use of fuck is never frowned upon in this album, but that is exactly what makes Father John Misty great. "Bored in the USA" goes as far to include a laugh track behind piano music where Misty complains about student loans and subprime mortgages. Each song is completely different from the last, there is a mariachi band then on a subsequent track an electronic intro, yet somehow it all works together beautifully.

Tying everything together is Father John Misty's incredible voice. His voice is so clean and so beautiful its hard to catch the sarcasm and subtle jokes that he places in his lyrics. You get enraptured by his tone, and the beautiful music. Sometimes the track can get a bit wordy, but it is almost impossible to notice while you are wrapped up in how good everything just sounds. If you are new to Father John Misty or a die hard fan there is something for everyone in this record. Get it.
