MisterWives - Our Own House

MisterWives
Our Own House
2015

The first album from MisterWives Our Own House accomplishes exactly what it set out to do, make great pop music. Bright, Crisp and catchy this album combines a fantastic classically trained singer with a band that creates the perfect environment for splashy tunes. The title track, also the first song on the record, has blaring ska-esque horns and a popping rhythm section which sets the tone for the rest of the songs on the record. MisterWives is never going to bring something extremely avaunt-guard or thinky, but that isn't the point. The intent of the album is to make great pop music for 2015 and in that respect they certainly have accomplished that goal. Despite their pop aspirations, MisterWives still manages to keep a very independent feel, you could hear these songs on top 40 radio just as easily as you could hear them in a hipster dance club.

The album does suffer from some slow down in the final third where ballads start to creep in. They just feel a bit out of place in this super bright album and take away from the overall feel. This is the type of record where you need a California sunset and a fast car, or some spin dancing alone in your apartment. A great first effort from MisterWives, and one you will be hearing over and over agian.
