Hozier - Hozier

Hozier
Hozier
2014

This is the first album from the Irish born Hozier and is self titled. The album combines blues, classic rock and folk music in an interesting blend of soulful music. Unless you have been living under a rock you have heard "Take Me to Church" which has been a huge hit and is on almost constant radio play. "Take me to Church" is a great track and highlights Hozier's soulful singing, but it is not the only tack to do so. The album is full of great classic sounding music. His use of the guitar in a very paired down way is so refreshing to hear. Just a solid electric guitar sound with a little distortion to give it a nice gritty feel.

Death is explored in a few tracks like "In a Week", "Sedated" and "Work Song". I think "Work Song" is actually my favorite track from the record. It is so powerful and dark, it really shows what Hozier is capable of. For a first album this is absolutely incredible, he writes with passion and soul and it makes his songs feel rich and full. There is an old Americana Country feel to these songs that strikes a cord with almost anyone. A great record from a great artist, and I can't wait to see what He does next.

9 out of 10 💀
