Punch Brothers - The Phosphorescent Blues

Punch Brothers
The Phosphorescent Blues
2015

Punch Brothers are an American/Classical/Bluegrass/Jazz band and their latest release is called "The Phosphorescent Blues". I've never heard of Punch Brothers before and the first song on the album is a ten minute confusing all strings song, so my hopes were not set very high. Luckily the rest of the album is much more concise and has a real purpose. The cool thing about Punch Brothers is they usual classical or Jazz instruments but most of the songs don't sound dated, its as if the music is grounded in it's past but still looking to push a genre of their own creation forward. The groove they are able to create without drums on most of the songs is really incredible. Julep is a prime example, there are no drums and while there is a bit of a bluegrassy feel you find yourself bobing your head right along.

On a first listen I was ready to not like Punch Brothers at all, but their music is extremely interesting. It is something I have not heard before even though the music could be considered classical at times. you should definitely give the Punch Brothers a chance, but you can go ahead and skip the first track on "The Phosphorescent Blues".
