The Decemberists - What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World

The Decemberists
What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World
2015

The Portland based Decemberists have released their newest LP "What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World" much to the delight of folk and indie fans alike. Their breakout album "The Crane Wife" almost a decade in their rear-view its expected for The Decemberists to either phone it in and give us another album of the same, or try to completely reinvent themselves. That however is not what they've done at all. This record still has the classic sound of the Decemberists, Collin's unmistakeable voice, Harmonicas, and swaying thoughtful songs; however where it diverges is in the feel of the album.

Much of the Decemberists' music has a very melancholy vibe. It's sad, but in that kinda ok with everything way. It's as if the characters in the song are looking back on a life lived rather than actively participating it. This album is different, there is a very distinct sense of happiness and joy. Some of the songs (Make You Better, Mistral) rise high and loud, as if the stories need to be remembered and celebrated. Also gone from this album is the often convoluted song writing. There is far less of the Elizabethan thee thous and the like and much more of solid song writing. It's easy for me to say that "What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World" is one of my favorite Decemberists albums yet. Get some indie-folk in your life.
